T.R.E. is Natural Stress and Tension Release

T.R.E. is a natural physical "no talking" practice that safely and gently releases symptoms of stress, tension, anxiety and trauma from the body. Like a massage from the inside out, the process returns the body to a more calm, relaxed and balanced state. T.R.E. initiates the body's innate physiological release mechanism (tremoring) in a mindful, controlled and sustained way to safely and gently release symptoms of stress, anxiety, tension and trauma from the body. It can be immediately effective as you let go of the chronic muscular nervous tension right from the core, where the protective muscle pattern is created in the psoas (a.k.a. "Fight/Flight") muscles. As a body based, "no talking" approach, it can be effective both stand alone or in conjunction with talk based - or other - therapies. Clients re-learn to activate the body's natural mechanism and once they have  learnt, our clients then have a easy to use practice for life. 


T.R.E. has it's early origins in the research done in the 1960's by Dr Peter Levine (he holds doctorates in medical biophysics, and psychology).  As stress consultant to NASA during the space shuttle era, Dr Levine's research led him to look at predator/prey behaviour and make interesting observations about the way in which animals literally shake off their stress and how humans have repressed this mechanism.  His very readable book "Waking the Tiger" is an excellent starting point from which to understand how this works.  David Berceli created TRE as a usable practice for daily life that activates this tremor mechanism in a gentle and safe way; my teacher Caroline Purvey trained with David Berceli and adapted the exercises further.  I teach T.R.E. as taught by my teacher, but also with the addition of specific breath work (informed by my breathwork training) and grounding/containing exercises.


You are taught to re-ignite the body's innate stress release mechanism through simple trigger exercises that initiate tremors in the deep core muscles (psoas). The brain stem becomes activated to release stress held in the nervous system while you lie in a relaxed position to allow the body to move. The process returns the body to a more calm, relaxed & balanced state. Clients have described T.R.E. as feeling like a massage from the inside out.  As each person is unique, the autonomic movements during releasing will be unique to the individual and also will often be different at every session.  As it is the body’s natural stress release mechanism, it is something that everyone would benefit from learning (see below for details of how to learn).  There is no need to talk about past events. I always teach supporting techniques alongside T.R.E. ; these include breathwork, and grounding/holding/containing practices which further enhance the safe holding of T.R.E. sessions as well as giving clients additional empowering and calming practices to be used at any time needed. This supports emotional and nervous system regulation.


T.R.E. can be learnt and practiced by almost anyone, whatever their age (age 7 up) or physical ability. I offer the guidance, supervision and support materials to help clients achieve this and become empowered to practice at home, when ready. I  start clients off with a workshop or short course, as I have found this to be the best way to learn this powerful practice; .years of teaching experience have shown me that this gives my clients the confidence to manage safe and effective home T.R.E. practice; with this support it can become a life-changing tool. 


Who is T.R.E. suitable for? T.R.E. is not just for trauma. Being our most basic and natural method of stress release it's for everyone right from athletes and yoga practitioners wanting to release tension and free up the body to improve performance, to clients wanting to feel freer, happier and more resilient in their lives.  T.R.E. can also be a profound release to those who have more intense stress symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks and P.T.S.D.  Children can also learn it, and benefit from the simple "no-talking needed" approach.

Whether learning 1:1, via Skype, on a short course, or at a workshop, your experience is personal and every client is given individual time to support their particular needs.  

The experiential learning is also supplemented with theory to support understanding how the T.R.E. works.

While the T.R.E. practice primarily involves teaching clients to learn and use this empowering practice for themselves and to learn how to practice self facilitation, sometimes gentle interventions can support release.  I tune into what is needed in the moment; any touch is only given with  the clients' permission.

Workshops

Having attended one of Deborah’s T.R.E. presentations I decided to try out the therapy myself. As someone with relatively low stress, probably due to my fitness regime & commitment to take time out for self regularly, I wasn’t sure what, if anything, I would get from the sessions. However, I wanted to be able to share my experience with clients as there was a chance it could benefit some of them.

The T.R.E. workshop provided solid background information on what the therapy is and how it works (along with some great book recommendations), it provided a clear step by step process that once taken through by Deborah meant I could do it on my own at home, and once I relaxed into it, it helped me to release the build-up of what I call ‘daily little stresses’ that often compound in the body (and can easily snowball into bigger stresses showing up as aches & pains). Now, as I continue to practice T.R.E., it is helping to increase the flexibility in my adductors, it provides me with a mental & physical escape from it all during the actual session (almost sleeping through the tremors) and that allows me to achieve a real sense of calm by the end of the session. I now see it as an integral part of my wellbeing routine and can recommend it to literally anyone & everyone.

Weekly Group Course

(learn in 4 sessions):

Weekly groups are affordable, and are a more "gentle" introduction to T.R.E. with the support of others embarking on the journey. They give you the help of group practice (doing any practice in a group can be more powerful than your own, depending on your needs).  They also give you the support and experience of others who are all at different stages on their T.R.E journeys as clients who have already learnt can drop in .


I keep my groups deliberately small (10 max - including drop in clients), to ensure that every participant has time for some individual attention, and possible interventions.


The course Includes theory presentations to watch in your home,  home practice support materials and any e-mail or phone support you may require whilst learning. Also included is breath work and grounding exercises.


After the initial course, clients can drop in at discounted follow up rates to continue with group practice should they wish.

I received my T.R.E. training from Caroline Purvey, TRE UK®'s Lead Practitioner and I qualified in March 2016.  The T.R.E. (known at TRE UK® as The Total Release Experience) Practitioner Training is taught as a comprehensive year long  training and is accredited by the FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapists);   TRE UK® is also CMA (Complementary Medicine Association)  registered.  Caroline, is the most experienced practitioner of TRE in the UK. 

As TRE UK®  Lead Practitioner for South West England I also assisted with mentoring newer trainees. 


In April 2018 I left TRE UK® to branch out and offer T.R.E. as an Independent Practitioner.
